Look no further. Alpenwild’s Scenic Alps by Rail Tour stands above the rest! Alpenwild has perfected traveling by trains in the Swiss Alps. Here's what sets a guided Alpenwild Rail Tour apart from any other Swiss Rail tours.
Switzerland has some of the most scenic train routes in the world, including the Bernina Express, Glacier Express, GoldenPass Line, and along the Gotthard Panorama Express route. On our Scenic alps by Rail tour, you will ride in 1st class on the trains and boat excursions. The only exception is on a couple of excursion trains that only have one class, such as the Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat. On this tour, enjoy the spectacular alpine scenery through the panoramic "vista" windows while you sit comfortably in your first-class Swiss rail seat.
No other tour operator offering a Swiss rail tour includes better hotels, carefully chosen for their superb cuisine, traditional Swiss charm, and convenient locations. We seek out independently owned 3- and 4-star small hotels. Many of them have been in the same family for generations and have an on-site owner to ensure the kind of attention to detail that makes your stay so enjoyable and memorable. Every night on our tour, you’ll have a private room with an ensuite bathroom. In Zermatt, we stay at a resort hotel—with a Matterhorn view, an indoor/outdoor pool and a full spa.
On our Scenic Alps by rail tour, you’re traveling through the four language regions of Switzerland; Swiss German, French, Italian, and Romansch. You’ll get to sample the great cultural diversity within Switzerland as it is reflected in their regional and local specialties. With our focus on food, you’ll enjoy the best of these local specialties, cheeses, wine, and chocolate. All breakfasts and dinners are included on this tour, and we feature a la carte dining wherever possible at select restaurants.
Many operators farm out trip leadership to third-party guides they’ve never even met prior to the tour. We use our own guides exclusively. They are intimately familiar with the route, history, and culture of Switzerland. They are English speakers and fluent in the local Swiss languages as they have also spent many years living in Switzerland. They are the best in the business. They bring the route to life and provide you with an amazing experience! Want to know more? Meet them on our Alpenwild Trip Leader page.
Though the trains and the majestic scenery of the Swiss Alps are the main attraction, Alpenwild also makes sure you'll enjoy the journey by exploring some of the best excursions along the way! In Lucerne, our favorite experience is Mt Pilatus. You can travel up to the Gornergrat in Zermatt for the best views of the Matterhorn. From Grindelwald you will train to the highest railway station in Europe which is the top of the Jungfraujoch on the longest glacier in the Alps.
You’ll have your luggage waiting for you at the hotel nearly every night, so you can carry just a light daypack and enjoy the experience to the fullest. Alpenwild has arranged for your luggage to be picked up at the hotel in the morning and delivered directly to the hotel you are traveling to that day. On one day, (Glacier Express train day) the group will assist with getting luggage on and off the train... although we do have hotel porters that will help getting it to/from the train station.
Alpenwild offers the Scenic Alps by Rail tour on both a small group guided basis or as a self-guided tour. On a self-guided Rail tour, you have both flexibility and support. You choose the dates, and we’ll make the reservations and provide the daily instructions to follow. We get you started, and we’ll be here for you every step of the way. Your vacation, Alpenwild's expertise.
We would love to have you join us in the Alps! Let us show you all our favorite corners and off-the-beaten-track spots in the Alps we're sure you'll come to enjoy it as much as we do. You can read more about the guided Scenic Alps by Rail tour and our Self-guided version.
