Look no further. Alpenwild’s Via Alpina and Bernese Oberland Traverse stand above the rest! Alpenwild has perfected deluxe trekking in the Swiss Alps. Here's what sets a guided Alpenwild trek apart from any other Via Alpina trek:
No other tour operator on the Via Alpina includes better hotels, carefully chosen for their superb cuisine, traditional Swiss charm, and convenient locations. We even hand-pick the rooms. We seek out independently-owned small hotels, many of which have been in the same family for generations, and have an on-site owner to insure the kind of attention to detail that makes you stay so enjoyable and memorable. On the rest day we select an especially relaxing location—typically with a pool and spa features. Every night you’ll have a private room—no packed musty dormitories, bathrooms down the hall, or huts on an Alpenwild Via Alpina. We feel that when you sleep better, you hike better!
On the Via Alpina you’re hiking through some of Europe’s great food regions—the Rhine Valley, Bernese Alps, and the Swiss Riviera. With our focus on food you’ll enjoy the best of local specialties, cheeses, wine, and chocolate. All meals are included—breakfast, lunch, dinner, and trail snacks. We feature a la carte dining wherever possible at select restaurants.
Alpenwild was the first tour operator to offer the Via Alpina on both a guided and self-guided basis, and we continue to be the leader, offering you more experience, more options, and a level of expertise and service unmatched by any other outfitter in the world.
Our route is true to the Via Alpina, so we start in Vaduz, the capital of the Principality of Liechtenstein. It’s near the Austrian border and just steps from the Rhine and your crossing into Switzerland. It stands out as the only country where 100% of its territory is in the Alps. And 40% of Liechtenstein is covered by forest making their hillsides green and lush. We’re so sure you’ll love your time in Liechtenstein that we offer a pre-tour package so you can explore this Alpine gem and start your Via Alpina refreshed and ready to go.
Many operators farm out trip leadership to third-party guides they’ve never even met prior to the tour. We use our own guides exclusively. They are intimately familiar with the route, history, and culture. They are certified and legally authorized to guide on the Via Alpina. Most are native English speakers. They include professional World Cup skiers, an Olympic athlete, naturalists and skilled photographers. They are the best in the business. They bring the trail to life and provide you with an amazing experience! Want to know more? Meet them on our Alpenwild Trip Leader page.
Though the hiking is the main attraction, Alpenwild also make sure to enjoy the journey by exploring some of the best excursions along the way! In Engelberg, on the eastern half of the Via Alpina, our favorite experience is Mt Titlis and in Gstaad, on the Bernese Oberland Traverse, our favorite excursion is Glacier 3000.
You’ll have your luggage waiting for you at the hotel every night, so you can carry just a light pack and enjoy the hike to its fullest. When possible, we use a shuttle to speed you to the trailhead or to pick you up at the end of the day—saving you from walking miles along a road to get to and from the trailhead.
We would love to have you join us in the Alps! Let us show you all our favorite corners and off-the-beaten-track spots in the Alps we're sure you'll come to enjoy it as much as we do. You can read more about the guided Via Alpina and Bernese Oberland Traverse.
