It’s easy to fall in love with Slovenia. Our guests come back describing it as “enchanting,” an “undiscovered gem,” and “the Alp’s best-kept secret.” This tiny, mountainous country is just half the size of Switzerland, so it’s easy to explore and just waiting to be uncovered. Slovenia is where the Alps meet the Adriatic. It’s where the Alps begin in the east and start their march across Europe. Slovenia has been at a cultural crossroads for thousands of years, and Italian, Ottoman, and Germanic Alpine influences are still close to the surface.
The Julian Alps were named after Julius Caesar who planted settlements here over 2000 years ago. Its rugged ridges, glacial bowls, deep forests and noticeably quieter and more remote than those in other parts of the Alps. These steep-sided mountains are known for their well-crafted hiking trails, as well as for their biodiversity. As you hike and trek the Julian Alps, you’re sure to find many wildflowers—including lilies and orchids—which you’ll find nowhere else.
Glistening lakes dot the Julian Alps. We stay on Lake Bled, one of the most beautiful mountain resorts imaginable. It’s a fairy-tale setting overseen by an 11th century Romanesque castle. In the center of Lake Bled you’ll visit an island with a 17th century church that rises above the shimmering water. You’ll also discover beautiful Lake Bohinj within Triglav National Park, one of Europe’s oldest national parks.
The emerald Soča river is the most beautiful river in Slovenia. It’s headwaters start high in the Julian Alps where they are fed by snowmelt and many freshwater springs that emerge from the canyon walls. We stay in Bovec, a gateway to Triglav National Park, and flanked by the highest peaks of the Julian Alps. Because of its gorgeous setting, it’s become a haven for outdoor and adventure sports enthusiasts.
You’ll benefit from our first-hand knowledge of the Alps and years of hiking in Slovenia, the Julian Alps, and Triglav National Park. Alpenwild’s English-speaking local guides and support staff offer a level of expertise that no other operator can match.
Every Alpenwild trip places a high priority on the wonderful cuisine and regional food specialties of the region in which we travel, and our Slovenia and Julian Alps adventure is no exception. Farmstead alpine cheeses, hearty soups, mouth-watering smoked sausages, prosciutto (or prsut as they call it), strudels and cream cakes will fuel your hiking adventure.
