Which country in Europe has the densest network of hiking trails? As much as we love Switzerland, fact is, the Principality of Liechtenstein packs more great hiking trails into its small footprint than any of its European neighbors. Liechtenstein is an alpine country—one of only seven. However, it stands out as the only country where 100% of its territory is in the Alps. And 40% of Liechtenstein is covered by forest making their hillsides green and lush. It’s the 6th smallest country in the world—just 62 square miles—about the size of Washington, DC, so immersing yourself in Liechtenstein is easy. With a population of just 38,000 residents, each of Liechtenstein’s 11 villages has a cozy, small-town feel because…well, it is a collection of small, cozy towns. Just stay a few days and you’re sure to leave with friends in Liechtenstein.
In four days, you’ll get the perfect introduction to Liechtenstein, whether you’re arriving and doing a pre-tour prior to hiking the Via Alpina, or just passing through on a first-time visit.
Liechtenstein Trail
The best way to get to know Liechtenstein is on the Liechtenstein Trail, which connects all of Liechtenstein’s 11 municipalities. You’ll experience majestic views, a thousand years of history, charming villages, fruitful vineyards, dense forests, and quiet, restful countryside. There’s even a popular extension to Malbun, Liechtenstein’s only ski resort. And since Liechtenstein is a small country—about 15 miles long from top to bottom—you can complete the entire Liechtenstein Trail in just a few days. You pick your own pace. A strong hiker could cover the Liechtenstein Trail in a couple days, but most walkers want to take a little more time to leisurely enjoy the alpine scenery.
Malbun Mountain Resort
Liechtenstein's only ski resport is in Malbun where you're snuggled up against the rugged ridge that forms the border with Austria. A chairlift to Saries gives you a jumpstart on the ascent and sets you on the ridgeline Princess Gina Trail. You'll ascend Augstenberg (2359m) before arriving at the Pfälzer Hut in time for lunch and to begin your ascent back to Malbun.
