Saas-Fee - Until the 14th century, the town of Saas was the only community in the Saas Valley. Four villages eventually arose out of Saas and of those four, Saas-Fee (5,935 ft.) is the most renowned. Surrounded by thirteen 4,000 meter peaks, the car-less glacier village of Saas-Fee lies on a high plateau above the Saas Valley floor and the other three Saas communities. Saas-Grund, in the center of the valley, is an ideal starting point for many high-altitude hiking trails. Saas-Almagell's main attraction is Mattmark, a natural dam. Saas-Balen is home to a late Baroque period circular church, a building of national significance, and the Fell Brook which roars through the center of the village.
From the single access road entrance to Saas-Fee, several quaint lanes lead down into the heart of the village. Even though there are many shops, restaurants and boutiques, the village has kept its alpine character and charm. All above the village, glaciers flow from the Michealbel Alps. This range separates the Matter valley, containing Zermatt and the Matterhorn, from the Saas valley.
