Rediscover the Golden Age of Alpinism

From 1854 to 1865, Europe’s gaze was captivated by the mountaintops during what is now referred to as the Golden Age of Alpinism. Within these eleven years, most of the 4000-meter peaks in the Alps were first summited, often by British mountaineers. This remarkable era began with the ascent of the Wetterhorn in Grindelwald and culminated in the historic first ascent of the Matterhorn.

Premier Hiking, steeped in Tradition

This tour connects two mountains that are as iconic as they are formidable. Along with the Eiger Mountain and the Matterhorn, you’ll traverse two mountain ranges—the Bernese Alps and the Pennine Alps. Rediscover the Golden Age of Alpinism as you undertake a traditional route through the Bernese Alps, over the legendary Gemmi Pass, across the Rhône Valley, and into the heart of the Pennine Alps.

Traverse a Timeless Path Through the Alps

Your journey begins in Grindelwald as you ascend the Eiger Trail into the glacial expanse. The initial days of your trek parallel the Via Alpina, one of Europe’s premier long-distance trails. You’ll navigate through the breathtaking Lauterbrunnen Valley, where 72 waterfalls cascade from the upper cliffs. Your overnight stay in Griesalp, a secluded alpine hamlet, offers the comfort of a surprisingly luxurious hotel. Next, you’ll skirt the shores of Öeschinensee, regarded as the most beautiful lake in Switzerland, before descending into Kandersteg for the evening. Following in the footsteps of Jules Verne and Mark Twain, you’ll traverse the Gemmi Pass into the spa town of Leukerbad, situated above the Rhône Valley. Along the way, you can cross the Europabrücke, the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the Alps, before returning to Randa to take a train to Zermatt, where you’ll enjoy stunning views of the Matterhorn. While in Zermatt, don’t miss the opportunity to ride the Gornergrat cogwheel railway, the highest train in Europe, ascending to one of the most breathtaking panoramic viewpoints in the Alps. At the Gornergrat summit, you’ll be surrounded by more 4000-meter peaks than anywhere else in the Alps.
