The Engadine and down the Val Bregaglia to Italy

Three cultures, three languages, and three thousand years of history are all close to the surface as we embark on an inn-to-inn adventure in the Upper Engadine and down the Val Bregaglia toward Lake Como.

Charming Villages in the Swiss & Italian Alps

Set in a high valley amidst the Bernina Alps, St Moritz is legendary as a winter resort, and even more beautiful in the summer, as sunlight bounces off the lakes and mountains. In summer there is always excitement in the air with vintage car shows, sporting events, and a string of exclusive fashion boutiques on Via Serlas, the St Moritz shopping mile. You’ll traverse the alpine meadows below Piz Corvatsch and descend into the remote Val Fex to arrive in Sils Maria, a perfectly charming village tucked between Lake Sils and Lake Silvaplana in the Upper Engadine.

Where History and Nature Meet

At the Maloja Pass (pronounced “ma-LOY-ya”) we stay in an historic hotel dating to 1646. The Maloja Pass was the domain of traders and smugglers for most of the past 200 years, but now is a haven for relaxing outdoor activities. A descent from the Maloja Pass takes us into the peaceful Val Bregaglia (pronounced “bray-GAHL-ya”). Our route stays above the valley floor and offers panoramic views of the dramatic skyline.

Val Bregaglia is steeped in history and dotted with quaint villages, terraced gardens, and charming palazzos that once belonged to the valley's wealthy families. We'll spend the night in one of the palazzos before arriving in the medieval town of Chiavenna, jsut north of Lake Como.

Onward to More Adventure

We conclude with a return to St Moritz—the ideal jumping-off point for onward travels on the Glacier Express, or heading back to Zurich for return flights.
